EU pledges to raise €20bn a year to boost biodiversity
(EU cam kết tăng 20 tỷ euro mỗi năm để thúc đẩy đa dạng sinh học)
New strategy to protect nature includes far-reaching habitat protections, and restrictions on pesticide use (hạn chế dùng thuốc trừ sâu) – but campaigners warn enforcement is key.
The European Commission has committed (cam kết) to protecting 30% of the EU’s land and oceans by 2030 as part of the European Green Deal, in a plan tentatively welcomed by environment groups (các nhóm hoạt động vì môi trường) who warned far-reaching ambitions (những tham vọng có sức ảnh hưởng lan rộng) must not only exist “on paper”.
The 10-year plan, published on Wednesday, includes commitments to reduce the use of chemical pesticides (giảm việc sử dụng thuốc trừ sâu) by 50%, plant 3bn trees by 2030 and reverse the decline in pollinators (đảo ngược lại sự suy giảm của các sinh vật thụ phấn). Within the 30% protected areas, a third of land and sea will be under “strict protection” (được bảo vệ nghiêm ngặt), meaning there should be no human intervention (sự can thiệp của con người) besides minimal management to keep the area in good condition (giữ khu vực trong tình trạng tốt) for wildlife.
Strictly protected areas (các khu vực được bảo vệ nghiêm ngặt) will include carbon-rich habitats (các môi trường sống giàu carbon) such as primary and old-growth forests, peatlands, wetlands and grasslands. Currently only 3% of land and 1% of marine areas are under strict protection.
